All of you are probably wondering what the new types of gameplay modes really are, for a better answer we turned to IGN:
Harvester
One of the neatest games that even peaked Vincent's interest was this one. Everytime a player gets fragged, a skull will appear in the center of the map. It is the duty of your team to grab as many of the other team's skulls as possible and transport them back into the center of your team's base. If you get killed while the skulls are following you, all of them will disappear and you'll need to collect new ones.
1 Flag CTF
You're all familiar with the regular capture the flag. Two flags , one in each team's base and you have to get the other team's and bring it back. This time around, there's one flag that you have to get. And you don't bring it to your base, but to the enemy's base. They said this game generates lots and lots of kills.
Overload
This one is pretty interesting. Each team has a base that contains a little totem structure. The point of the game is to destroy the other team's totem.
Capture the Flag
No need for an explanation I think we all know what this is.
The demo itself only features one level, the Inner Sanctum, which really cool level. With this being stand-alone demo, meaning full version of Quake III: Arena is not required, only one level could be included or the download size that is already hefty enough, 121MB, would be even higher so id only gave us a small sneak peak to their next piece.
The level, Inner Sanctum, is a great level, like I mentioned above. It features two forts on each side and a bridge in the middle. Much like a very detailed, 21st century remake of the Original 2Fort series from Quake TF. After playing the level for the first time I found some new cool features that made the graphics look even better then the original Quake III: Arena. Like new lighting effects and modeling.
Another great feature of the demo is the new weapon, Prox Launcher! I have always been a fan of proximity mines and have been waiting for a great game to feature them. This gun allows you to drop grenade like bombs on the floor, walls, even other players, and when an opponent comes within a certain distance from them they explode. Very deadly if you place them right. You can rack up kills very easily if you hide them on the walls and floors right around a corner so the opponent doesn't have enough time to react before they are exploded into a million pieces! Muhahahah!
Next, the demo features many new power-ups. Such as Double-Up and Ammo regeneration. There really isn't much to say about power-ups because I think we all know what they are.
Lastly, a new menu system has been implemented into the demo. At first it was confusing but after taking a few minutes to snoop around I became familiar with it and was easy to use. The menu is a little less involved for the main menu and is heavier once in the game. The new in-game menus gives mod authors a ton of room to work with once the full version comes out. Allowing them to implement menus and new features their mods that are unheard of and havent been able to be produced in past games. With a simple tap on the 'ESC' key you get a list of options and you can scroll threw them while still playing the game, pretty sweet if you ask me!
There isn't much more to say about the demo. But after playing it for nearly 3 hours my eyes started to hurt and I needed a break, but I was no doubt having the time of my life. I haven't played Quake III: Arena in months, just been too damn busy with other games and hardware, but I can say this has jump-started my Quake career again, watch out guys!
id Software has created a great demo and I really look forward to the full version of this. All great things come with a price, that is why this baby is a whopping 121MB download, but its worth it! Even though there isn't a whole lot to the demo except, a new level, new weapon, new power-ups and a new menu system, it gives us an idea of what we should expect in the near future. id has got something really hot going and we'll just have to wait it out and see what else they have in store for us!
