Baldur's Gate 2 Review
October 22, 2000

Multiplayer

Baldur's Gate II supports Multiplayer play via IPX, TCP/IP, MPlayer, Modem, and Serial (null modem). An annoying problem I've had in multiplayer is that it seems to get very choppy, nearly unplayable at times, and then clears up soon afterwards. Playing a TCP/IP game with my friend was a frustrating ordeal, with it becoming unplayable every, say, 10 minutes. It obviously wasn't from internet latency or "lag", since the host machine was on a DSL and the other computer, while only on a 56K modem, was only a few houses away. My friend, however, stated that on his side he experienced no problems with choppiness. We concluded that the host has the most information being sent to and from, and thus requires more processing power than the players connected to it. This is really a game-detracting problem and needs to be remedied in a patch as soon as possible. Besides that, however, playing on-line is extremely fun. It works just as single-player, except the host computer assigns "Permissions" to the other players, such as who can control which characters, who can initiate dialogue, and so forth. Forgetting about the main goal of the game and going on a serial-killing rampage through the peaceful town of Trademeet, murdering all the townsfolk in the name of "freeing their poor, tormented souls" makes for great fun playing on-line with a friend, and is highly recommended (after you save the game, of course).
