Sound
Diablo
II supports Creative Lab's EAX, delivering some of the best
environmental sound you can get in this kind of game. It truly
sets the
mood for whatever environment you're in, be it the creepy sounds
of the
Cold Plains of the west, or the middle-eastern chants and drums of
the
deserts to the east.
The combat sounds are terrific, with swords clashing, fireballs
exploding,
and monsters shouting their death cries as they are defeated. Each
monster
has its own unique sound, which was a wise choice by Blizzard;
they
could've just as easily used just a few sounds and then proceed to
vary
them a bit.
Graphics
Two
words: out-dated. When will Blizzard learn that people can handle
resolutions of more than 640x480? The characters are
pixel-wrought, as are
the monsters. The environments look surprisingly good though.
Blizzard has
added some optical tricks to provide the illusion of depth.
Thankfully, the sheer fun-factor of Diablo II, as with all other
Blizzard
games, severely shroud out the poor graphics. Within minutes,
you'll be
enthralled by the fast-paced gameplay and the "just a few
more kills" feel
of the game, that you'll most likely forget about the imperfect
graphics.
Diablo II does support 3Dfx Glide, however. It renders the spell
effects
and makes them look truly amazing. From the icy circle of Frost
Nova, to
the writhing, glowing strips of Chain Lightning, the spell effects
of
Diablo II are excellent.
