Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2 is a third person action/adventure game where you take on the role of Julie, your typical overly-proportioned heroine. F2 is the latest offering from Ritual Entertainment and the Gathering of Developers. Utilizing the Quake III engine, F2 has garnered quite a bit of hype. Who wouldn't want a third person game in the spirit of Tomb Raider, only with graphics a hundred times more advanced as well as additional features? Let's see if Ritual has pulled it off.
Gameplay
Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K 2 starts off in a place called "Eden". Apparently, Eden is a planet disguised as an diseased F.A.A.K. 2 planet, thus protecting it from evil dictators, mutant aliens, would-be gods, Regis Philbin, and so forth. It is also surrounded with a huge planet-wide force field. The town is a gorgeous place, and as you explore around town, you'll speak to many of the towns folk and learn more about your surroundings. There is a training building you can enter that will greatly familiarize you with all aspects of the game, such as jumping, climbing, and combat practice.
The game is very linear, and follows a set course. The first mishap in the game is when Julie is asked to help destroy a bunch of green flies that have been attacking the livestock at the local farm. She eventually makes her way down below the town to the "Queen Bee", the chief bug. This initiates a boss encounter. Each boss encounter is scripted to get a good view of the boss as well as display its name. There is a specific pattern to beating each boss. For instance, for the Queen, she sits in one spot and turns around constantly. Giant beams of light shoot from her eyes indicating her field of vision. If she sees you, you're in trouble. Thankfully, there are many crates and boxes "conviniently" stacked about, so you can hide behind them when you see those beams coming. Right next to her you there are 4 meteoric rocks, which are as you will find out, "highly volatile". By the time you make it to the Queen, you would've picked up some explosive charges. When the queen isn't looking, you must set a charge by one of the rocks. When it explodes, it will take away a quarter of her life. You must do this 4 times in total. It really feels like a console-esque boss encounter with life bars and patterns of defeation, which is by no means a bad thing. Once you do figure out each Boss' pattern, you will no doubt win, which does take away some of the excitement.
Julie's life is displayed in two bars: health and water. When you take damage, each bar will far a bit. Health is just what it sounds like, and required the standard health-potion or fruit to restore. Water is very useful as the higher level of water you have the better your defense will be and you'll run faster and jump farther. Water can be replenished by finding vials of it or simply standing in a water source such as a fountain or waterfall.
The enemies are greatly varied and interesting. Most of the models are a bit creepy, adding to the excitement factor. Some of the more eerie ones are the giant ape-like creatures in the caves deep below the city and the half cyborg/half alien/have skeleton monstrosities with guns strapped to them. The enemies are, in m opinion, harder to defeat than the bosses as they don't really follow a set pattern. You'll have to use your strafing/jumping skills whilst firing at the same time to defeat them. The monsters will sometimes appear out of no where and surprise you from behind. Julie is quite fragile, so the best tactic is to avoid getting hit altogether.
There are a few console-esque puzzles in the game. For instance, you'll have to climb across a pipe in this one area. The trick is that there are 3 huge vents spouting white-hot steam every few seconds. You'll have to time it just right and start moving when the first stops shooting steam. These challenges are a welcome break from the somewhat difficult combat, and aren't at all difficult to figure out.
