Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 Review
November 7, 2000

Sound & Music

Red Alert 2's sound effects and music are simply superb. The music is appropriate for the game's intense atmosphere, featuring drill sergeant-like chants and an abundance of electric guitars. It seems to pick up during the heat of the battle, furthuring its intensity and mood.

The voice acting of the FMVs is in particular very well-done and professional. The Soviet's accents are very well done and don't seem at all faked. Each character's personality is different, sometimes leading to a slight scuffle amongst themselves. Never once will you feel like the actors are overacting, and many times it feels like you're watching a movie. Kudos to Westwood for their excellent selection of actors to portray the many characters of Red Alert 2.

The sound effecs are where the game really shines, however. Turrets fire their rounds, flak cannons make low booming sounds as they down enemy planes, and rockets scream towards their targets. Units have voices for themselves, as well. Each unit has around three different responses they'll give when clicked on or ordered. Such a small number of voice responses is a bit dissapointing after having been spoiled by Blizzard's Warcraft and Starcraft games, where units have a myriad of often humorous responses. No words are needed for war, however, and a GI saying "on the way" is really all that's necessary.
