Red Alert 2's multiplayer element is a bit limited. With options only for LAN and Westwood Online, its obvious Westwood didn't put all that much effort into the multiplayer game of Red Alert 2. When will game developers learn that us gamers enjoy options, no matter how minor they may seem. I would've like to have seen Modem, IPX, and especially TCP/IP added to the list.
Westwood Online is a great matchmaking service; it's easy to find a person to play against, and starting up a game is a simple process. Westwood Online seems to be a bit laggy, however, a problem which I'm sure they're working on. Once you find an opponent with low latency, playing online is extremely good fun. Suffice to say, it's the most fun I've had playing at RTS online since Brood War on Battle.net. Though I did get my butt handed to me more than a few times, I can honestly say that I was "just warming up" and that all those times I lost were "just practice games".
Conclusion
Red Alert 2, despite a lack of originality (I mean, come on -- how many times do we have to beat the Soviets before they give up?), as well as a few other flaws such as the primitive looking "3D" terrain, is one of the greatest RTS games I've ever played. It combines nonstop action and suspense in the campaign, along with all of the strategy and tactical possibilities required in any good RTS. If you're up for a game that is sure to give you hours of fun, and can live with a few problems that will most likely be fixed, then Red Alert 2 is highly recommended.
